You’ve created a free guide, checklist, quiz or another useful resource for your audience.
But what happens after someone downloads it?
This is where a lead magnet for coaches can become so much more than a freebie sitting on your website.
When it’s set up properly, your lead magnet can help you attract the right people, grow your email list and start building a relationship with potential clients, without you having to constantly show up online or sell yourself.
But there’s a bit more to it than creating a PDF and adding an opt-in form to your website.
You need a simple way to get your lead magnet in front of the right people, a landing page that encourages them to sign up, and an automated email journey that delivers the resource and keeps the conversation going.
And that doesn’t have to mean complicated tech or a huge sequence of emails.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through what you actually need to turn your lead magnet into a simple system that grows your email list, builds trust with potential clients and gives them a natural next step when they’re ready to work with you.
Because your lead magnet shouldn’t just collect email addresses.
It should start a relationship.
What Is a Lead Magnet for Coaches?
A lead magnet is something useful that you offer for free in exchange for someone’s email address.
It could be a short guide, checklist, workbook, quiz, template, video or even a mini training. The format matters less than the value it provides.
For coaches, a good lead magnet should solve a small but relevant problem for the person you want to work with.
For example, if you’re a business coach, you might create a checklist to help someone identify where they’re losing potential clients. A mindset coach could offer a short exercise to help someone overcome a particular block. A health coach might create a simple guide to getting started with a healthier routine.
The key is to make it useful enough that someone is happy to exchange their email address for it.
And there’s another important point.
Your lead magnet doesn’t need to solve their entire problem. In fact, it probably shouldn’t.
It should give them a useful starting point, help them get a quick win and show them that you understand the problem they’re trying to solve.
That’s what makes a lead magnet such a useful part of your marketing. You’re not simply collecting email addresses. You’re giving someone a reason to take that first step towards getting to know you.
From there, you can continue the conversation through email and, when the time is right, introduce them to the ways you can help them go further.
Why Having a Lead Magnet Isn't Enough
Having a lead magnet is a great start, but simply putting a freebie on your website and waiting for the downloads to roll in isn’t going to do much for your business.
Think about what happens when someone finds your lead magnet.
They see your offer, decide it looks useful and give you their email address. They’re interested enough to take that first step.
But then what?
If they receive the download and that’s the end of the interaction, you’ve missed the opportunity to continue that conversation.
Your lead magnet needs to fit into a bigger journey.
That doesn’t mean you need a complicated funnel with dozens of emails and layers of automation. It simply means thinking about what you want someone to experience before they download your freebie, when they download it and what happens afterwards.
For example, your journey might look something like this:
They discover your lead magnet → they visit your landing page → they sign up → they receive the resource → they receive a few helpful emails → they get to know you and your approach → they take the next step when they’re ready.
The lead magnet gets them through the door. Your follow-up is what helps build the relationship.
And it’s worth taking a little time to make sure the lead magnet itself is doing its job too. If you’re getting plenty of downloads but very few people are engaging with what comes next, the problem might not be your email sequence. Your freebie may simply need a rethink.
I’ve put together a free guide, Why Your Lead Magnet Isn’t Converting (And How to Fix It), which walks you through some of the things to look at if your lead magnet isn’t bringing in the right people or leading to clients.
Once you know you have the right lead magnet, you can start thinking about the journey around it.
What Does a Lead Magnet Funnel Look Like?
The word “funnel” can make things sound far more complicated than they actually are.
For a simple lead magnet, you really only need a few key steps.
Someone discovers your free resource and clicks through to a lead magnet landing page. They enter their email address, receive the resource they were promised, and then begin a short email journey that helps them get to know you and your approach.
It might look something like this:
Someone finds your lead magnet → they visit your landing page → they sign up → they receive the free resource → your emails keep the conversation going → they take the next step when they’re ready.
The technology behind it can be relatively simple. Your landing page connects to your email platform, the sign-up triggers your automation, and the automation delivers the lead magnet and starts your email sequence.
The important thing is that each part works together.
Your landing page needs to make the value of the free resource clear. Your sign-up process needs to be straightforward. Your delivery email needs to arrive when expected. And your follow-up emails should feel like a natural continuation of what someone has just signed up for.
When those pieces work together, you’re no longer relying on someone downloading your freebie and hoping they remember you a few weeks later.
You’re creating a simple, automated way to stay connected.
And that’s really the beauty of a good lead magnet funnel. It does some of the relationship-building for you, while still allowing the relationship to feel personal.
How to Create a Lead Magnet Landing Page
Make the Benefit Clear
Your headline should tell people what they’re going to get and, more importantly, how it will help them.
“Download my free guide” doesn’t give someone much reason to hand over their email address.
Instead, focus on the problem you’re helping them solve or the result they can work towards.
Keep the Page Focused
Your lead magnet landing page has one main job: get the right person to sign up.
You don’t need to tell them your entire business story, list every service you offer or send them off to five other pages.
Give them enough information to understand the value of the resource, then make the next step obvious.
Make Signing Up Easy
The opt-in form should be straightforward.
In most cases, you don’t need to ask for lots of information. If all you need to deliver the lead magnet and start your email relationship is their name and email address, don’t make them fill in a ten-question form.
Every extra field gives someone another reason to abandon the page.
Tell Them What Happens Next
People are more likely to feel comfortable signing up when they know what to expect.
Let them know they’ll receive the free resource by email, and if they’re going to receive helpful follow-up emails from you, be clear about that too.
It sounds simple, but these little details make the whole experience feel more professional and trustworthy.
Don't Forget Mobile
Your landing page might look fantastic on your laptop, but that doesn’t mean it works well on a phone.
Check the page on mobile before you send anyone to it. Make sure the headline is easy to read, the form is simple to complete and the button is easy to tap.
A beautifully designed lead magnet won’t do much for your business if people can’t actually sign up for it comfortably.
The aim isn’t to create the longest or most impressive landing page.
It’s to create a clear, focused page that makes it easy for the right person to say, “Yes, this is exactly what I need.”
What Happens After Someone Downloads Your Lead Magnet?
Deliver the Lead Magnet
First things first, make sure the resource arrives quickly and reliably.
Someone has just given you their email address because they want something from you. If they have to wait hours or search their inbox wondering where it is, you’re not getting the best possible start to the relationship.
Your delivery email should be simple. Thank them for signing up, give them clear instructions for accessing their resource and let them know what they can expect next.
Welcome the New Subscriber
Once they’ve received the lead magnet, don’t immediately disappear.
A welcome email gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself properly and remind them why they signed up in the first place.
You might share a little about your approach, explain why the topic matters to you or simply ask them to reply and tell you what they’re currently struggling with.
It doesn’t need to be a lengthy introduction. It just needs to feel human.
Start Building the Relationship
This is where your follow-up emails become really useful.
Instead of immediately trying to sell your coaching programme, think about what would genuinely help the person who downloaded your resource.
You could expand on something from the lead magnet, answer a common question, share a useful tip or help them look at their problem from a different perspective.
You’re giving them a reason to open the next email.
Over time, they start to understand how you think, what you know and whether your approach feels right for them.
That’s how trust is built.
Introduce Your Offer
At some point, it’s completely appropriate to talk about how you can help.
The key is that it should feel like a natural next step rather than a sudden change from helpful emails to “BUY MY PROGRAMME”.
If your lead magnet helps someone identify a particular problem, your coaching offer might help them actually solve it.
That’s a much more natural connection.
And remember, not everyone who downloads your lead magnet will be ready to work with you immediately. That’s OK.
Some people may need more time, and continuing to provide useful content means you’re still there when they’re ready.
Give Them a Clear Next Step
Every email doesn’t need a huge call to action.
Sometimes the next step might simply be reading another useful article, replying to your email or following you on social media.
Other times, it might be booking a call, joining a programme or exploring one of your services.
The important thing is that your subscriber isn’t left wondering what to do next.
A good lead magnet journey makes that next step feel natural.
And that’s why the emails after the download matter just as much as the free resource itself.
How Many Emails Should You Send After a Lead Magnet?
There isn’t a magic number of emails you need to send after someone downloads your lead magnet. You don’t need to create a 27-email sequence just because someone on the internet told you that’s what a “proper” funnel looks like.
For most coaches and service providers, starting with three to five helpful emails is more than enough. The first email can deliver the resource and explain what happens next. The emails that follow can build on what they’ve just downloaded, answer common questions, share useful advice and give them a little more insight into how you work.
At some point, you can naturally introduce your offer and explain how you can help them take the next step. This doesn’t have to be a hard sell. If your lead magnet has helped someone understand a problem, your offer can show them how you can help them actually solve it.
Once that initial sequence is finished, there’s no need to stop emailing altogether. Ideally, your new subscriber moves into your regular email marketing, where you continue sharing useful content, insights and occasional offers. That way, you’re not relying on those first few emails to turn a stranger into a client overnight.
The aim isn’t to send as many emails as possible. It’s to send enough useful emails to build trust and give people a reason to stay connected with you. Quality matters far more than quantity.
A Lead Magnet Should Lead Somewhere
A lead magnet shouldn’t be the end of your marketing journey.
Someone has found you, decided that your resource is useful and trusted you enough to give you their email address. That’s a valuable first step.
Now you have the opportunity to keep that relationship going.
Maybe they read one of your emails and realise that you understand the problem they’re facing. Maybe they click through to one of your blog posts. Maybe they follow you on social media for a while. Or perhaps, when they’re finally ready for help, you’re the person they think of.
That’s the journey you’re creating.
And it doesn’t need to be complicated.
You need a useful resource, a clear landing page, a reliable way to deliver it, a handful of helpful emails and a natural next step for people who want to work with you.
The technology should support that journey, not get in the way of it.
Once everything is connected, the process can happen automatically in the background while you get on with running your business.
That’s when a lead magnet becomes much more than a free download.
It becomes a simple way to attract the right people, build trust and stay connected until they’re ready to take the next step.
